Hello guys, in this tutorial, we will discuss methods of how to fix "The file 'autorun.dll' could not be loaded or is corrupt. Setup can not continue. Error code is [0x7E]" on Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. This type of error indicates that a critical file (autorun.dll) needed for a setup or installation process is either missing or damaged.
AutoRun.dll errors are very annoying because they prevent users from adequately launching a program. This usually happens when you are trying to run an app on your Computer but the Autorun.dll file is missing on your Computer, this triggers your computer to respond saying "The file 'autorun.dll' could not be loaded or is corrupt. Setup can not continue. Error code is [0x7E]." I first encountered this error when I was trying to install Windows 11 on a friend's PC, I tried launching the setup, but the setup failed to launch. This error is caused by so many factors such as viruses that corrupt the autorun.dll file, or you mistakenly deleted the Autorun.dll file.
There are several methods that can be used to fix this type of error on your Windows computer.
- You can do a software update: Ensure your Windows operating system is up to date by installing any pending updates. Sometimes, missing or damaged files are fixed through updates. (check picture below).
- Scan for viruses: Sometimes viruses may corrupt system files including the autorun.dll file, causing your PC not to run an app, a thorough scan for viruses and malware will help you get rid of the virus causing problems to your PC.
- Check Installation Media: If you're installing software on your computer from a CD/DVD or USB drive, ensure that the installation media is not scratched, damaged, or corrupted. If the installation media is damaged, corrupted, or scratched, you may need to obtain a new copy of the installation files.
- Download the Autorun.dll file: You can just download the file and replace it with the missing Autorun.dll file. (File path Windows > System32 >).
- Check recycle bin: In some cases, you may have mistakenly deleted the Autorun.dll file. Launch recycle bin and then restore the file.
- System File Checker (sfc): Launch Command Prompt and run as administrator. Enter commands (procedure below), this will scan and attempt to repair corrupted or missing system files, including autorun.dll.
- Repair Windows Installation: If none of the above steps work, you may need to consider repairing your Windows installation. This can be done using your Windows installation media (DVD or USB) and following the repair or recovery options.
Always be cautious when making changes to the system of your computer, especially the registry, and consider backing up important data before attempting major system fixes. If the problem persists, you might want to seek assistance from a knowledgeable friend or a professional technician.
